WORLD BOOK DAY! I expect you are all getting very excited about this fantastic event for 2025. I have been busy sending out Author Letters and poems to schools who have requested them. If you are reading this and would like the same, please drop me a line via the contact page. The poems I have sent out have been created on a typewriter. If you would like to know what a typewriter is you can ask a teacher. Below are copies of some of the poems I created especially for World Book Day and they are all about, books, reading and, of course, poetry! Have a wonderful time, and don’t forget – READING ROCKS!
MY POEMS
SOMETIMES
My poems grow
Like the clappers.
Dance like flappers.
Twist like a murmuration.
And I can’t find
A beginning or an end
To them.
***
SOMETIMES
My poems sail
A word wide ocean
Carrying a notion
A big commotion
Of dreams and ideas.
***
SOMETIMES
My poems talk
Amongst themselves.
They chatter, they natter.
And I have to listen
In to catch their drift.
***
SOMETIMES
My poems can’t settle.
They dither,
They wither.
Then they’re
Bin talk.
***
BUT SOMETIMES
My poems
Sing wonderful things;
They beam with imagination.
Grow wings
And I let them fly
Across the page.

PICK ME PLEASE
I’m sitting lonely on a shelf,
The others have been taken.
Nobody picked me again,
My confidence is shaken.
***
I know I look a little worn,
No pictures to entice,
I haven’t got a cover
And I don’t look quite so nice.
***
I seem a very dull brown book
And nobody chooses me.
But my story is still the same inside
Open me up – you’ll see!
***
I’d like to entertain you,
Please take me down and look.
My pages need some turning.
I’m not a well-thumbed book.
***
Pick me, pick me, oh please pick me
When story-time comes around.
Don’t judge me by my cover,
I’m waiting to be found.

POETRY BOOKS
Books full of magic.
Books that never age.
Foot tapping rhythms
that leap off the page.
***
Clever rhyme, free verse.
Forms that make their mark.
Poetry books are waiting
for you to find their spark.
***
Poems, poems, poems.
Words, words, words.
Every subject covered
that needs to be heard.
***
Poems about many things,
each one a winner.
Poetry for breakfast,
and poetry for dinner.
***
Please go into bookshops
and shout of poetry treasure.
Take a magic wand with you
for good and extra measure.
***
Conjure up a rhythm,
a poem to enchant.
Let’s cast a spell on bookshops
for poetry books to dance.

INSIDE A BOOK
I lost myself inside a book.
I saw so many things.
I took a trip to other worlds
With aliens and kings.
***
I flew into a snowstorm.
I tiptoed past a bear.
I found a magic kingdom
with little people there.
***
I had tea with a tiger.
But not a snake or fox!
I went to Mount Olympus
and found Pandora’s Box.
***
I sat upon a friendship bench,
and gained a superpower.
I walked around a secret lake
And found a fairy bower.
***
Each book I had, I read them all,
curled up in my chair.
Poems, stories, wondrous facts
were in my hands, right there!
***
I didn’t buy a ticket,
I didn’t have to travel.
I turned the pages one by one
and let my dreams unravel.

WORLD BOOK DAY DILEMMA
Who shall I go as?
What shall I be?
Maybe a Tiger who’s hungry for tea.
***
Harry Potter? Hermione?
The Cat in the Hat?
A Snail or a Whale? Or Ratine the rat?
***
Stickman? A Gruffalo?
The Witch from the West?
A Wild Thing? A spider? Oh, what will be best?
***
Maybe Jane Austen?
Will Shakespeare would do.
Michael Morpurgo? Winnie the Pooh?
***
Peter Rabbit? Or Alice?
Toy Story, which toy?
Woody, Buzz Lightyear? Maybe Billionnaire Boy?
***
‘Who shall I go as?
Please help me decide.
I just cannot choose,’ the book lover cried.
***
‘World Book Day is driving me
right round the bend!
By the time I decide it will be at an end!’
***
And then came the answer,
‘I know it, I know it.
I’m going to go as my favourite poet.’
***
HAVE A WONDERFUL WORLD BOOK DAY!
