SPACE
Hi everyone, Welcome back to school. I hope you all had a fun Easter!
I’m adding some Space poems to my blog and poem section this month. Some of these will appear in a Space Collection I am putting together – title yet to be decided. I hope you like them and find them useful for any Space projects you might have at school.
WHAT IS THE UNIVERSE MADE OF?
Bubbles and belts.
Pockets and gas.
***
Protons and neutrons.
Elements, dust.
***
Hydrogen. Helium.
Mysterious dark matter,
***
swirling around
in a big foggy plasma.
***
Nebula nurseries.
Filaments. Voids.
***
Planets and galaxies.
Asteroids.
***
New stars, old stars.
Expanding black holes.
***
Supernovas, atoms
and molecules.
***
Comets and meteors.
Suns and moons.
***
Gamma rays, light years.
It even has tunes.
***
But where did Space come from?
How did it start?
***
With a very BIG BANG
from a fiery heart.

THE UNIVERSE SINGS
The Universe sings in chords and keys,
including A B C D and G.
***
A black hole beats with deep vibrations.
A billion years of dark creations.
***
Comet Halley, from head to tail,
strums a long melodious trail.
***
Planets hum and planets howl.
Some may squeak and some may growl.
**
Chirping, beeping, Planet Earth
warbles out for all it’s worth,
***
sending sound waves into space
calling, ‘hi, we’re the human race.’
***
Mighty Jupiter has a haunting voice.
An ethereal, low and mournful choice.
***
Mars might howl with wind and rage.
A wailing guitar on the stage.
***
Mercury jingles like fairy bells chiming.
Quite magnetic with its timing.
***
Uranus, through its thirteen rings
an eerie sound like Sirens, sings.
***
Saturn’s tunes are low and grumbly.
The oscillating tones are rumbly.
***
Venus bubbles like an underground stream
An eerie electromagnetic dream.
***
On Neptune high pitched squeaks are heard,
Like a helium-speaking bird.
***
But all those sounds in space, to hear,
cannot be heard with the human ear.
***
Only when played through sound machines,
can we hear the songs, the Universe sings.

CAT 341 (Felicette – France 1963)
Up into space there travelled a cat.
Not a cat with an owl, or a Cat in a Hat.
Not a cat with a fiddle. Not a Jellicle cat.
Not a cat with a grin, just an ordinary cat.
A cat from France, a stray so they say.
Taken by scientists to launch into space.
One of fourteen all tried out and tested.
But Cat 341, was the one they suggested.
A cat, with the given name Felicette.
A cat who became a Space Cadet.
Launched in Veronique AG1 47.
Cat 341, flying closer to heaven.
Up she went, in the capsule, so high.
Tracked and observed as it shot through the sky.
Up through the atmosphere, up to the place
scientists call, sub-orbital space.
No cat has gone further, no cat has at all,
than Cat 341, in her fifteen-minute haul.
There followed a tortoise, jellyfish, spiders.
A peculiar bunch of sub-orbital gliders.
But Felicette, with her sweet little face,
was the only cat, ever, in sub-orbital space.
A black and white cat, a heroine cat.
Cat 341, we should never forget.

THE NIGHT SKY
Super moon and supernovas,
Shooting stars with flaming tails.
Satellites and glowing planets;
Where asteroids and comets sail.
Ursa Major, Ursa Minor –
Constellations fill the sky –
Cassiopeia, Pleiades,
Orion’s Belt and Gemini.
High across the sky at night
A billion stars and stardust flies,
The Milky Way, a galaxy,
Where our solar system lies.
In the north sky high above,
Lies a faint and constant star.
For the traveller, Polaris, is
The most important star by far.
When I stare up to the heavens
Full of bright and twinkling light,
A universe so vast, it makes me
feel quite small tonight.
