SEPTEMBER

Hello everyone, I’ve just popped on here to wish you all lots of luck for the new school year. If you are going into Reception class at a school for the first time, there is a little poem below about what it’s like learning to be new. Have fun, and don’t worry!

***

LEARNING TO BE NEW

I’m the new one at school,

with you, and you, and you.

***

We’re learning

where to leave our coats

and where to put our bags,

and which table to sit at.

I’m on Badger table.

My friend Jess is on Fox.

I wish she was on my table,

but I can still see her.

***

We’re learning

where we have to go for lunch,

and where the toilets are.

And where we’re allowed

and not allowed to go.

We’re learning things

like saying ‘yes’ after our name,

for a thing called the register.

***

We’re learning

to sit quietly and listen

when the teacher is speaking,

and when we mustn’t make a noise.

Sometimes it’s a bit hard

when all I want to do

is jump up and dance,

or shout and run about.

But Miss Oliver explains that

we have playtime to let off steam.

I have to think about that,

but it makes me sit quietly.

***

I’m learning to put my hand up

to ask questions, and answer them.

I’m learning that school

makes me feel quite tired

and that my favourite thing

is when story time comes round.

Miss Oliver reads to us in the book corner,

where we all sit, on the floor,

or lying back on some big soft cushions.

I’m learning to like school.
