NEW POEMS FOR FEBRUARY 2024
POEM ONE – a play on words – this one is ‘awareness’)
HIPPOWARENESS
This river horse can run a mile,
But never in a lumbering style.
Don’t be fooled, to say the least
Despite it’s gait, its a dangerous beast!
_______
Its charge is like the ‘Light Brigade’.
You can’t outrun a Hippo’s rage.
At thirty miles an hour on land;
Please find a tree – you understand!
_______
In water they are just as scary.
So, if you’re near a pool be wary.
An angry pod will flip a boat
And snap up all that’s left afloat.
_______
Don’t underestimate this beast.
You may not be its choice of feast,
But their jaws are big, their bite is worse.
And this is the end of my Hippowareness verse.

POEM TWO is about what might happen to a creature if it changes shape
A CIRCULAR CRAYFISH
I am a circular Crayfish,
I have no beginning or end.
This makes it quite hard when I’m swimming,
I tend to go right round the bend.
_______
My head and my body are merged
Into one indistinguishable ball.
When feeding I find myself spinning,
I really can’t stay still at all.
_______
I go with the flow in the river,
Rolling and bobbing along.
It’s hard being completely circular –
For a Crayfish that shape is all wrong!

POEM THREE is a prompt line: I woke up inside a tree…)
Inside a tree I snuggled,
A deep and comfy hollow.
And then my brain remembered
I was actually a swallow.
I should be on migration,
And now I feel bereft,
‘cos I woke up inside a tree,
To find my friends had left.
