June 2026 – after a mini heatwave at the end of May we seem to be drowning in rain and battered by winds. But whatever the weather, poetry is always on my mind. And poetry is what I have been working on since I last posted on my blog in April. I have three Historical Horror poems appearing on the https://scaryness.com website, including one about some noblemen who ended up in a sewer, the day that William the Conqueror exploded! As well as one about the Plague Doctor. Here are a few poems to get us thinking about summer – I’m sure its on the way.
SUMMER SIZZLE
Sizzle go the sunbathers
Lying on the sand,
Sizzling in the summer heat
Across the sizzling land.
Sizzle go the sausages
On the barbecue.
Sizzle go the burgers
And the people in the queue!
Sizzle go the flowers
Sizzle go the trees.
Sizzle go the city streets
Without a cooling breeze.
Sizzle goes the heatwave
Sizzling the earth.
Sizzling you and me for all
The sizzling sun is worth.

THAT IS SUMMER
when the air sings
with the swoop of swallows
and the whoop of kids
at the end of term
when the sky beams
with endless blue and sun
and the chatter and laughter
and barbeques, in back gardens
with the dash of swifts
among the clouds
and swarms of passengers
in soaring planes
that is summer
when the parks echo
with sunbathers and playtime
and the pavements click
to the endless tread of footsteps
when the streets smell
and swell with cafes and restaurants
and all the world
is walking and talking outside.
That is summer.

SEASONAL SPELL
I made a stew yesterday.
The recipe said season it well
so, I sprinkled in:
a pinch of Winter snow.
a cupful of Spring blossom.
a big helping of Summer sunshine.
a shake of Autumn leaves.
It was the best stew ever!

IF THIS SUMMER WAS AN ANIMAL:
It would slither down a rainbow.
It would breathe out rays of sun.
It would chase off any storm clouds
And race the shadows just for fun.
It would hop, it would bounce,
It would leap, it would fly
It would whistle, it would trill.
It would soar it would glide.
It would laugh, it would shriek
It would dance across the ocean.
It would sunbathe on the sand
and cause a great commotion.
(thank you to Carl Burkitt for the prompt)

HAPPY SUMMER EVERYONE!
