It’s NATIONAL POETRY DAY! The theme is ‘PLAY’ and to celebrate this wonderful day, here are some poems! Hurray for poetry!

I WANT TO PLAY IN THE OCEAN

I want to play in the ocean,

to swim with dolphins and whales.

To speak their language

and learn their ways.

To see where they go to spend their days.

**

I want to ride in the ocean,

to speed through the cold green seas.

To wing through

the swaying ocean grass.

To see where the little fish flit and fuss.

**

I want to hide in the ocean.

To go where sea-creatures go.

To know all the places

dark and deep,

where strange looking fishes live and sleep.

**

I want to learn in the ocean.

I want to sail on the waves.

To study the sea

and dive each day,

to play the games the sea creatures play.

**

I want to dance in the ocean

to hold a mermaid’s tail.

To dive on a wreck

and find silver and gold,

on a ship that sailed in the days of old.

**

I want to live in the ocean,

to know all its secret places.

To burrow my way

through the coral and caves.

To hear the song of the ocean waves.

**

I want to be the ocean.

To shine like a sparkling gem.

To feel the moon-tide

ebb and flow.

To roll with the currents, wherever they go.

**

I want to play in the ocean,

to swim with dolphins and whales.

To speak their language

and learn their ways.

To go where they go, to spend their days.

DO THE TOYS PLAY AT NIGHT?

Have you ever wondered

when the moon is high and bright,

if your toys wake up and come to life

and party through the night?

**

Do the dolls put on their ballet shoes,

and dance around the room?

Do Furbies, rap and boogie?

and do rockets have a zoom?

**

Do all the cuddly toys

bounce on the sofas and the chairs?

Flattening the cushions and,

in the morning, your mum swears

**

she plumped up every one

before she went to bed.

Then she points her finger at you,

and you get the blame instead!

**

You can never catch your toys out,

no matter how you try.

You can creep on tiptoe, super quiet,

to catch them by surprise.

**

But when you burst into the room

they’ll all be in their place.

And every toy will wear

a ‘wasn’t me’ look on its face.

MY POEMS

Sometimes

my poems grow

like the clappers.

They dance like flappers.

They take a shape

like a murmuration.

**

Sometimes

my poems sail

a wide word ocean,

carrying a notion,

a big commotion

of dreams and ideas.

**

Sometimes

my poems talk

amongst themselves.

They chatter, they natter,

and I have to listen

hard to catch their drift.

**

But sometimes

my poems sing of big

and wonderful things.

They grow wings,

and they fly

across the page.

A POEM IS A UNIVERSE

of words

tumbling

in a head above

a blank page

waiting

for a BIG BANG

to give them life.

PLAY DAY

Play crept into my dreams last night,

and I woke this morning with play

on my mind. I leapt out of bed.

Looked outside. The sky was blue

and the day was dry. Had a quick

breakfast then shouted – bye!

Grabbed my skipping rope

took it outside, turned and turned

it around with a whoosh! The dog

was barking, my mum yelled – sssh.

I skateboarded down to the end

of the street. Called for the friend

I said I’d meet. We kicked a football

around in the park. Then we lay down

on the summer grass, and counted

the plane trails crossing the sky.

Climbed a tree. Made a den.

Told jokes. Laughed together, again

and again. Stayed til our tummies

rumbled away. Said it was time

to call it a day. Went back home

in time for tea. What a day it was

for my friend, and me.
