IT’S JULY. And that means the summer holidays will soon be here! Perhaps you’re going camping, or visiting another country. Whatever you’re doing or wherever you’re going I wish you a wonderful time. And here are a few different poems about summer and destinations

A POEM ABOUT A PAINTING

BY THE SEA

There’s a boat with a sail.

And – is that a whale?

Waves on the sand,

and gulls in a band

shrieking in the breeze

over sparkling seas.

There’s a dog on the run

with a bark in the sun.

Paddlers in the shallows

and long evening shadows.

Strollers on the shore

and a fisherman for sure

with a rod and a float,

and a sturdy boat

riding the surf

like a horse on the turf.

So much you can see

in a poem by the sea!

SUMMER SIZZLE

Sizzle go the sunbathers

Lying on the sand,

Sizzling in the summer heat

Across the sizzling land.

___

Sizzle go the sausages

On the barbecue.

Sizzle go the burgers

And the people in the queue!

___

Sizzle go the flowers

Sizzle go the trees.

Sizzle go the city streets

Without a cooling breeze.

___

Sizzle goes the heatwave

Sizzling the earth.

Sizzling you and me for all

the sizzling sun is worth.

STAYCATION

‘We’re going to go on safari,’

Mum and Dad decided.

‘Oh yes, yes let’s,’ all of us cried

But then the excitement subsided.

___

‘Will the lions come into our tent?’

‘Will the elephants trample it down?’

‘Will snakes and spiders scare us at night?’

‘I’m not sure,’ said Dad, with a frown.

___

‘Will the monkeys steal our pants?’

‘Will the sun burn our heads bright red?’

‘Will a leopard drag all of us up in a tree?’

‘Right,’ cried Dad, ‘enough said.’

___

‘I think we’ll just go to the seaside,

We can swim and fish from the pier.’

We can eat fish and chips out of paper,

And I can enjoy a cold beer.’

___

‘What if the weather is windy?

What if we’re swept, out to sea

By a tidal wave, forty feet high?’

‘What?’ cried Dad, ‘goodness me.

___

Is there nowhere safe to go?

There seems to be nowhere at all.

Let’s put up a tent in the garden,

And leave our bags in the hall.’

CAMPING SONG (make up a tune!)

We love camping

Even in the rain.

It’s raining, it’s pouring,

It’s bucketing again!

___

It’s leaking through the canvas,

It’s creeping round our toes,

It’s got inside my sleeping bag

And now it’s in my nose.

___

It’s raining, it’s pouring

But we don’t care,

‘cos we love camping

In the open air.

___

Sun’s out, sun’s out

Now we’ll have some fun.

Camping, camping,

Fun for everyone.

___

We like it when it’s night time,

Underneath the stars,

All around the campfire

Looking out for Mars!

___

Campfires and barbecues,

Sausages and beans,

Fresh air, adventure,

That’s what camping means!

___

We love camping

Even in the rain.

It’s raining, it’s pouring,

It’s bucketing again!

BETWEEN MY TOES

When I go down beside the sea

I like the sand between my toes,

The curling water rushing in

As it slowly ebbs and flows.

I like the seagull’s epic shriek,

The way it glides above the sea.

I chase the little racing crabs,

Across the sand, away from me.

AND JUST BECAUSE IT SOMETIMES DOES:

RAIN

I can soothe you I can lash you

I can make you wear a hat.

I can get under your collar

I can hit you with a splat!

I can make your feet all soggy

I can bash your garden flat.

I can stop you playing games outside.

Yes me, I do all that!

HAVE A WONDERFUL BREAK FROM SCHOOL!
