HALLOWEEN! Time for some spooky poems! I’ll be posting poems between now and 31st October
HOCUS POCUS!
Hocus pocus a witch’s brew
Stirring up a frog LEG stew
Spider’s WEB and TAIL of rat
Mix it with a BONE of horse
Serve with MONSTER MASH of course!

MY COSTUME
HAS BEEN BANNED!
Halloween is on the way,
I’ve got my costume planned.
But then mum said, ‘oh dear, no way,
Your costume will be banned!
—
It isn’t very scary.
It’s a funny kind of creature.
But mum insists there’s no way
I can go, dressed as my teacher!

RAT-A-TAT-TAT
Spooks in the shadows
Dancing through the trees
—
Bats in the branches
Hanging where they please
—
Witches on a broomstick
Flying through the skies
—
Black cats in the darkness
With super-glittering eyes
—
It’s HALLOWEEN
It’s HALLOWEEN
On the door we’ll beat
Rat-a-tat-tat
Rat-a-tat-tat
It’s time for
TRICK or TREAT!

HUBBLE BUBBLE WE’RE IN TROUBLE!
HUBBLE BUBBLE
We’re in trouble
Hear the Zombies howl
HUBBLE BUBBLE
We’re in trouble
Witch is on the prowl
Looking for ingredients
to put inside a stew
HUBBLE BUBBLE
Run and hide
It might be me or YOU!

AFTER THE HALLOWEEN PARTY
There are spectral shapes on the landing,
they move with an eerie light,
and something spills out of the cupboard door
to fill all my fears tonight.
__
Shadows roll over the bedroom floor
I can see them in the gloom.
Vampires, ghosts and spiders,
are creeping around my room.
__
The face of a pumpkin lantern
is hovering in the air.
Things with wings are swooping,
and something brushes my hair!
__
And what’s that coming up the stairs?
My eyes are wide with fright.
A hand curls around the bedroom door…
…it’s Mum, come to say goodnight!

MORE SPOOKY POEMS TO FOLLOW…
WHO’S THERE?
Fingers play
on the window glass.
I hear them,
tap tapping –
let us in,
let us in.
A shiver
runs over my skin.
I listen, alert,
like a rabbit –
who’s there?
who’s there?
Shadows play on the wall,
dark night-demons.
A creak on the floor
behind the door –
what’s that?
what’s that?
Something cold drifts
across my skin.
Someone whispers
in my ear –
we’re here
we’re here

NIGHT FRIGHT
I am the face
in the shadows,
the creak
on the stairs
the thing that you sense
with the raising of hairs.
I am the monster
in the wardrobe
the something
under your bed
the tap, tap, tapping
on your window
the nightmare
you dread.
I am the moving shapes
that flicker on your wall
I am all things scary
and I’m the scariest of all!

EIGHT- LEGGED MONSTER
It was the night of Halloween
We were having so such fun,
Until the pumpkin went crazy
And everyone shouted run.
—
Its face had started melting
It was growing eight hairy legs.
Two bulging eyes were staring
As it rose up on those pegs.
—
I stood there frozen in the hope
This nightmare was a dream,
And then its hairy leg tickled
And I let out a terrified scream.
—
Please don’t scream, said the spider
And gave me a scary wink,
You think I’m your very worst nightmare
But I’m not as bad as you think!
—
When you scream it scares me;
It really is a din.
The very sound and sight of you
Puts me in a spin.
—
I promise I’ll try not to scare you
If you’ll let me hang around.
And later I’ll simply vanish
Out of sight and out of sound!

RAP FOR GHOSTS
they move in the night
they’re light and white
they come out of a cupboard
they give me a fright
dance in a trance
like shadows on a wall
grotesque and tall
they rattle and groan
and moan through the trees
white eyes, black eyes
glinting like coal on a fire
in the moonless gloom
and I’m in this tomb
my room shouting for mum
but she won’t come
she’s downstairs
with the TV too loud
laughing out loud
She won’t hear me
It’s clear I’m alone on my own
with the tap and the rap of
these ghosts in the gloom
in the tomb, my room.
