Brrr – what a chilly start to the New Year! Here are a few wintry poems to fit the feeling! With some from the Fairy Door Poetry Trail at Painshill Park in Surrey, that, sadly, ends tomorrow. It was such a privilege to be part of it.
JACK FROST
lay down his cloak
with cold hard hands.
***
Stilling the air
and freezing the land.
***
Icing the branches
that hang by the lake.
***
Frosting the hedgerows,
the berries, like cake.
***
Stilling the trees
and the fallen leaves.
***
Hanging up icicles
under the eaves.

THE OAK TREE FAIRIES
When cold winds blow
and bring the snow
the mighty oak
is where they go.
Inside the trunk
with lamps aglow.
Searching high
and searching low
to find warm cosy
Winter hollows,
where squirrels rest
and insect’s burrow.
Shut their door
and wait for swallows
heralding the start of spring.
Then the oak tree fairies sing.

THE HIBERNATION DOOR
Behind this door
there is someone who snores,
curled up in a spiny ball.
***
Dreaming of Spring
and wonderful things,
like slugs and beetles, and all.

WHO LIVES HERE?
Oh hoo, oh hoo,
oh hoo lives here
behind this fairy door?
___
Oh hoo, oh hoo
oh hoo lives here,
up on the seventh floor.
***
Oh hoo, oh hoo
has big round eyes?
Oh hoo, oh hoo,
is clever and wise?

THE NORTH WIND FAIRIES
From the cold and wintry north,
Flying, flying, hard and fast,
Blowing in a bitter blast.
Stir the air with icy breath.
Swirling through the winter trees,
Creeping up a crackling freeze.
Until Spring will have no more
And then they hide behind her door
And sleep until an arctic breeze,
Wakes them up and sets them free!

THE FROST FAIRIES
The frost fairies came
and laid down last night,
a cloak of lacework,
sparkling and white.
***
Glittering, shimmering
caught by the light,
they covered the ground
with their icy delight

THE SNOW FAIRIES
With a flurry, and a hurry,
a swish and a blast,
they fly through the forest,
swirling and fast.
***
All of a shiver
down from the sky.
Whiter than pearls
these fairies drift by
***
in a flutter of snowflakes.
A shiver of freeze.
Fingers of ice
on a blustery breeze.
