BONFIRE NIGHT

A few poems for 5th November

ROCKET

The rocket is ready,

Dad lights the tail.

Up it goes

With a glittering trail

Swoosh, whoosh,

OOH, WOW!

Dazzling us all

In the dark night skies.

Look at the rocket,

See how it flies.

Swoosh, whoosh,

OOH, WOW!

Rocket exploding

Over my head.

Green, blue and purple,

Gold, silver, red.

With a swoosh and a whoosh,

And a shower of light.

OOOH! WOW!

It’s fireworks night.

REMINDER FROM A HEDGEHOG

Every year in November,

Humans seem to know

That hibernating hedgehogs

Need a place to go.

They build a super hiding place

For hedgehogs just like me,

Full of branches, twigs and leaves

A cosy place to be.

Bonfires are the perfect place

To keep us snug and dry,

To keep out larger predators

If they come snuffling by.

But later on, you humans

Forget that we are there.

You set light to my hiding place

It really isn’t fair!

So, when you build your bonfire

Please can you remember

To check for sleeping hedgehogs,

On the Fifth of November!

JOHN JOHNSON

You will know this man by another name

A man who played a dangerous game

With a band of men who, for England’s sake,

Hatched a plan at the Duck and Drake.

The plan for a remedy dreamed up by this band

Was to quell a disease across the land.

By this, they referred to the Protestant King,

Whom the Catholics saw as a dreadful thing.

Thirty-six barrels of gunpowder to blow

The king and his ministers, high and low.

Protestants out and Catholics in.

Oh, what a terrible, treasonable sin.

But the plan was detected before they set light

To the barrels, and murdered the king that night.

When arrested this man gave not his true name,

But John Johnson, we know as Guy Fawkes, by fame.
