AUGUST IS HERE and the weather has been a bit more like summer. Here are some poem ideas for you to think about if you fancy scribbling some summer poetry: perhaps you can come up with some ideas about the sounds of summer, or a descriptive poem about something in the world around you. Spider shows how very small things can be inspiring, and last, but not least, a different way of thinking about laughter.
SUMMER SOUNDS
I heard a cricket chirping
For the joy of summer sun.
—
I heard some children squealing
In the ocean, having fun.
—
I heard a forest whispering
With the passing of a breeze.
—
I heard someone with hay fever
Make a giant sneeze!
—
I heard a steam train puffing
Full of passengers and cake.
—
I heard an aeroplane droning,
Too many journeys to make.
—
I heard the swallows calling
Above the summer fields.
—
I love the sound of summer
And the joyfulness it yields.

WAVES
Majestic,
White plumed.
A cobra rearing
poised to strike.
Booming, crash
smash and grab
landing down
on sand and shingle.
The seashore’s rug
rolled out, foam fringed;
a rushing swirl of sea melt
sucked back under
on the oceans wheel.
Repeat.

SPIDER
Tiny little money spider
crawling up my arm,
lighter than a breath of wind,
no cause for alarm.
___
Thank-you little spider
for your gentle inspiration.
A poem from a tiny thing,
today’s humble creation.

YOU’RE HAVING A LAUGH!
A bellyful of laughter
Isn’t very funny.
It makes your belly bounce
around just like a springtime bunny.
__
And when you laugh your socks off,
Your feet get kind of chilly.
That made me laugh until I cried.
I laughed myself quite silly!
___
I laughed until I couldn’t speak.
No chance to have a natter.
But when I split my sides
I thought, this is no laughing matter.
___
I’ve sometimes been the laughing stock
With people full of glee.
I laughed it off, I laughed with them-
But the last laugh was on me.
