WORLD POETRY DAY POEM
In the old days when I was at school
we read the poetry of people wearing
stern faces, with big bushy eyebrows,
waistcoats and ties, and hidden smiles.
—
Although sometimes the poets of olden times
wrote terribly funny and nonsense rhymes.
—
But the poets of today are
brighter and noisier and are
more easily seen and heard
and they write poems
that everyone can relate to
And they wear:
—
Shouty hats
And flowing dresses.
Squeaky boots
And coloured tresses.
—-
Flappy Cardies,
Rowdy socks.
Twirling shirts
And pants that rock.
—-
Itchy jumpers,
Twinkling eyes.
Smiles as wide
As big blue skies.
—-
Clappy hands
And tappy feet,
Warming up
A poetry beat!
—-
Tinkling voices,
Read out loud
Poems, pulling
In a crowd.
—
That’s what poets
Do today.
Let’s all shout
HIP- HIP HOORAY!
